What is Grounding?

Grounding refers to a range of practices that help to connect oneself with the earth, calm the mind, and be present in the moment. These practices include physical and mindful exercises such as meditation or spending time in nature. Grounding can also help to build awareness of your own body and energy. 


Grounding is important for anyone to do, but especially for those in their spiritual practices. Forming a connection with the earth and regulating your emotions is a good foundation for rituals and other magical workings. In addition, grounding can help you to practice focusing your energy for specific intentions.


Grounding can be done at any time:

  • When you wake up

  • Before you go to bed

  • Before ritual

  • When you feel drained or chaotic

  • When you feel out of sync with the world


Grounding Techniques:

  • Meditate or guided meditation

  • Connect with nature

  • Mindful breathing exercise

  • Yoga

  • Walk barefoot in the grass or sand

  • Lay on the earth. In grass, moss, dirt, sand, etc.

  • Sit by water (listen to the waves)

  • Spend time in water


It can take some time and experimentation to find a grounding method that works best for you. Everyone has their own needs and preferences, so explore and find something that works for you.


Tree Method

  1. Sit, lay, or stand in any comfortable position in a peaceful environment. 

  2. Let yourself fully relax and take three deep, slow breaths. Feel your energy flowing through your body and become aware of the earth beneath you. 

  3. Begin visualizing roots extending from your body down into the earth. The roots can go as deep as you want. Even if you are on the ground or many stories above, the roots will reach the earth. 

  4. Next, imagine your body is the trunk of a tree. It is strong and sturdy. 

  5. Visualize branches sprouting upwards towards the sky and absorbing sunlight.

  6. You have formed a connection with the earth. 

  7. Allow any excess energy to flow down your roots and absorb into the earth. Or to replace any energy you are missing, draw some in from your branches and roots into your body.

  8. Stay like this for a few moments and notice how you feel.

  9. When you feel you are ready, gently open your eyes.

  • Cedar: for healing, purification, and protection.

  • Chamomile: for purification, healing, and soothes anxiety.

  • Cypress: for protection, comfort, and healing.

  • Eucalyptus: for protection and healing.

  • Frankincense: for sanctity, purification, meditation, and protection.

  • Grass: for serenity.

  • Hyssop: for purification and protection.

  • Juniper: for cleansing, purification, protection, and psychic abilities.

  • Lavender: for healing, tranquility, protection, purification, peace, and wisdom.

  • Lilac: for protection, psychic abilities, purification, and prosperity.

  • Lotus: for blessing, meditation, and protection.

  • Mint: for purification, preserving health, and clarity of mind.

  • Moss: for perseverance, patience, nurturing, and grounding.

  • Oak: for purification, protection, health, and healing. 

  • Pine: for prosperity, healing, and purification.

  • Rosemary: for cleansing, protection, healing, and improving memory and concentration.

  • Rowan (Mountain Ash): for purification, protection, healing, psychic abilities, and wisdom.

  • Rue: for protection, mental abilities, purification, health, and comfort.

  • Sage: for healing, good health, psychic awareness, and protection.

  • Sandalwood: for meditation, purification, peace, healing, and protection. 

  • Valerian: for purification, protection, and healing.

  • Violet: for tranquility, protection, and healing.

  • Willow: for eloquence, protection, healing, and dreams.

  • Amethyst: for psychic power, balance, protection, and healing.

  • Black onyx: for protection, stress relief, strength, self-confidence, healing, and wisdom.

  • Black tourmaline: for protection, purification, positivity, cleansing, inspiration, and compassion.
